General FAQs

Where can I ask the organisers a question?

Please email info@drachenfest.com.au

What are the shield construction guidelines?

At DrachenFest Australia, shields must be made of foam but can have a core made of a more rigid material such as wood or plastic. A shield core provides base rigidity ONLY and must be adequately covered in foam on all sides (front, back, and edges of the shield).

There are no formal requirements regarding the materials you use for the interior strapping of the shield.

While there are no specific rules regarding the thickness of the foam used around your core, the spirit of the construction of your shield should be, “this is a shield made from foam”. It’s unacceptable, for example, to coat a wooden shield in a thin layer of foam to hide that most of the construction is from wood. Players may also cover the foam of their shield in fabric.

Shields in the round category must not exceed 88cm in diameter, and shields in the heater/ tower category must not exceed 66cm at the widest point or 110cm at the longest.

Has DrachenFest considered the specific rules regarding replica firearms in Victoria?

Drachenfest’s rules comply with all Victorian firearms legislation, and our team remains up-to-date on any changes.

How will I get to know my campmates?

We have made Facebook pages and Discords for each camp, please join our Facebook group or check out our camps page for links to all of these communities. You can also join our general Discord server.

Can I have a campfire?

Fires must be in a player-supplied fire pit and are allowed in accordance with the fire safety rating that day as dictated by the CFA. You are also expected to have enough water in a vessel on hand to quickly extinguish the fire.

Can I bring a BBQ/ camp cooker?

Camp gas cookers, gas BBQs, etc, are allowed in accordance with the fire safety rating/ limitations we have that day as dictated by the CFA. You’re also expected to have the applicable fire extinguisher on hand, and do your best to keep modern/non-immersive cooking out of sight as much as possible.

Regarding air fryers and other powered appliances, we do not recommend bringing anything that requires power as access will be very limited for those without medical necessity (approved vendors excluded).

Can I come if I don’t have a medieval tent?

Absolutely! However, If you wish to camp with your dragon camp (ie. red, chaos, green, etc), then you will need to have a camping setup that is immersive in a medieval fantasy setting (ie. a historical tent, glamping bell tent).

If you don’t have a medieval tent, you will be allocated space in the out-of-character modern camping area, and you’ll have to walk to your in-character camp to join in the festivities.

Will I be attacked while walking from my out-of-character (modern) camp to my dragon camp?

If you’re worried about being attacked while walking to your camp in the morning we would recommend signalling to other characters that you’re not currently in character, and carry on walking to your camp.

Does DrachenFest have plans for recognition of First Nation's Peoples/land sovereignty?

DrachenFest Australia acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia, especially the Taungurong people of the Kulin nation, and pays respects to Elders past, present and emerging. There will be an acknowledgement of country at the opening and closing ceremonies.

Can I attend this event if I don’t want to participate in combat?

DrachenFest is so much more than combat: roleplaying, exploring, trading, crafting, bartering, dancing, celebrating, entering competitions, singing, shopping… the list goes on!

Are there costuming standards or guidelines?

Attendees will be required to wear a costume that would pass in a medieval fantasy setting. Guides, videos, and relevant vendors will be shared on our social media leading up to the event to help you put together a costume.

Do I have to register a group/ warband?
